Registration now open for the ECO-UNESCO young Environmentalist Awards

Registration is now open for the 18th annual Young Environmentalist Awards! The ECO-UNESCO Young Environmentalist Awards is an all-Ireland environmental awards programme that recognises and rewards young people who raise environmental awareness and improve the environment.

The programme, which has engaged over 39,000 young people since it began in 1999, supports and empowers young people to take environmental action. Thousands of young environmentalists in schools, youth groups and Youthreach centres throughout the island of Ireland make positive contributions to their environment and community by carrying out environmental action projects in the ten categories of Biodiversity, Climate Change, Energy, ECO-Art & Design, Waste, Water, Transport, ECO-Enterprise, ECO-Community Development and ECO-Health & Wellbeing.

The enthusiastic young teens pitch their projects at ‘Dragon’s Den’ style regional heat competitions held in the four provinces of Ireland for their place in the prestigious Final Showcase and Awards ceremony held in Dublin each May.

Speaking about last years’ Young Environmentalist Awards, President of Ireland Michael D. Higgins commented: "The Young Environmentalist Awards have been rewarding transformational thinking, recognising and honouring pro-active participants willing to make their own practical and imaginative contributions to our shared future. I congratulate all those taking part in the final Showcase and Awards Ceremony, and I thank [the young people] for being young citizens in whom Ireland can take great pride"

Last year’s awards ceremony was attended by several important Irish and international representatives, including UNESCO Representative Ms Melody Boeteng, Green Party TD Catherine Martin, Lord Mayor of Dublin Crona Ni Dhailaigh as well as the 700 young environmentalists and their teachers and youth workers.
