Celebrate the World Environment Day 2020 with YEE! Will you join us in a clean-up? Or would you prefer to learn more about waste management in our online lecture? The choice is yours!
We celebrate World Environment Day every year on 5th of June. This year we would like you to join us! World Environment Day was established in 197 by the United Nations as a day for promoting worldwide awareness and action for the environment. Over the years, it has grown to be one of the largest global platforms for environmental actions and is celebrated by millions of people in more than 100 countries. YEE is no exception!
This year’s theme is biodiversity, “a concern that is both urgent and existential”, stated by the United Nations. The theme of biodiversity demonstrates the interdependence of the human world and environment. What is biodiversity and why is it important? Biodiversity is usually defined as the variety of life on Earth in all its forms, meaning the variety of all living things on our planet. Biodiversity ensures the stability in the environment and healthy ecosystems, which provide us with many essentials we often take for granted. Biodiversity provides us with fresh water, clean air, and good quality soil and crop pollination. It also helps us mitigate climate change as well reduce the impact of natural disasters. Yes, biodiversity is not only fundamental to life on Earth, but also amazing!
However, biodiversity has been declining at an alarming rate in recent years, mainly due to human activities, such as industrial production, construction, pollution and climate change. In a UN report published in 2019, scientists warned that “one million species – out of an estimated total of eight million – are threatened with extinction, many within decades”. We need to act now for our nature, climate and people. We´ve never had a better chance to change our choices and create a greener world. Will you join us in this action?
On the most renowned day for environmental action, we have prepared two events that you can join and help us spread the environmental message of youth and promote responsible conduct by individuals, industries, and communities in preserving and enhancing the environment. Both YEE WED´s events are dedicated to taking action for the environment, demonstrating the topic of an aspect of our everyday lives that hugely harms biodiversity – waste. Poor waste management can impact biodiversity in many ways as waste has the power to reshape ecosystems and disrupt ecosystem services. According to Statista (2019), 348 million tons of plastic produced per year worldwide, half of which becomes waste!
So here are our World Environment Day suggestions for you:
Join us in Clean-up!
Together with UNEP Major Group of Children & Youth and Ukliďme Česko we have decided to organise a Prague clean-up on this day as a part of the initiative European Network of Volunteers for the Environment. How can you join us? It’s easier than you think! And yes you can join us even if you are not in Prague! On Friday you have two options:
🅰 Are you currently in Prague? Join us at 16.00 (CEST) at our YEE Prague clean-up base! We will meet at the corner of the streets Seifertova and Přiběnická, just next to the Prague Main Railway Station. We will make a small circuit, starting from the back side of the station going around to the Husitská street, below the Vítkov hill and back.
We can all meet there and enjoy the clean-up afternoon together! Together with Ukliďme Česko we will provide you with all the clean-up necessities – gloves, compostable garbage bags & good mood! And we have some YEE gifts ready for you as well:)
🅱️ You can join us even if you won´t decide to join our clean-up base in Prague. How? Wherever in the world you are, you can join us by your individual clean-up or you can organise a local community clean-up in your city. If you decide to do the individual clean-up, just go out to the streets, to your favourite park or a square and pick up some waste to help us clean our beautiful planet. If you would like to organise your local community clean-up, contact us for more support!
No matter how you decide to get involved in our initiative, be sure to take a PICTURE or a VIDEO capturing your clean-up activity and SHARE IT ON YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNTS WITH HASHTAGS:

Join our online lecture “I Set Fire to the Waste? Discussing Waste Incineration Dilemmas ”!
On Friday, June 5th at 18:00 CEST, join us together with The European Geography Association to learn more about waste incineration and how different countries cope with waste management. The online lecture will be held by Monika Gricnik and Lovro Jecl.
💡 Monika is in her first year of Master’s degree, specialising in physical and environmental geography with GIS, also working in Ljubljana Regional Waste Management Centre, leading tours and explaining the circular economy concept to visitors from all over the world.
💡 Lovro is a geography student – currently on a gap year, writing his thesis and working at the Slovenian Geodetics Institute. He also serves as a president at the Slovenian Young Geographers’ student club.
