People's Climate March Prague |
September was the perfect time for the momentum of the climate issue to be built. People were working a lot especially in New York, where the Ban Ki-moon summit on climate change was taking place. It was a global call to organise the biggest climate march in the history, just two days before the summit, and it was successful. On the 21st of September, New York was flooded with people marching for the climate, and not only for climate, but they were marching for EACH OTHER. There is an estimation of 400 000 people marching in New York among which Ban Ki-moon, Al Gore, Leonardo DiCaprio and so on. There were about 2800 events all over the world, including Prague. Local people, YEE office and our friends from IYNF were participating in the march. We started from Vaclavske Namesti and we continued until the Astronomical Clock in the center of Prague. Unfortunately there was no massive mobilisation, but nonetheless it's very nice that it happened, we supported the cause and we attracted the attention of a lot of people on the way. The summit already took place, and it looks like there is determination to really commit to solving this challenge and hopefully to have a Binding Global Treaty by 2015 in COP21 in Paris. The most important thing is that no one can say anymore that people don't care about the climate issue. If there is something we learn from this march is that the people can organise and they are not waiting for the governments to solve the issue. They have a vision of the world they want to live in and they are working themselves to save this earth, to save their house!
