Last week, on the 8th of May, it was a public holiday in Czech Republic. But a group of young, enthusiastic people decided to celebrate it by....working! It was, however, an enjoyable kind of work, combined with making new friends and spending time outside.

YEE was excited to organise, together with Tamjdem, a volunteering day at the ecological center Toulcův Dvůr. Tamjdem is a public benefit organisation that brings together volunteers from Czech Republic and abroad, in order to revive volunteering as a meaningful way to interact and get involved. They organise volunteering days, volunteering weekends and workcamps.

We started the day by meeting the participants and playing a name game, then we started the actual work in the farm's surroundings. We took the horses for a walk, collected the cut grass for compost, peeled the logs, took out the nails from wooden pieces or collected horse manure in order to use it as fertilizer. At lunch, we had a great time sharing the food we brought, as well as finding out more about each other and our countries of origin.

After finishing the work in the afternoon we played a scavenger hunt, which caused a lot of laughing - we sang songs about animals, made pig sounds and paper flowers, organised a frog choir. The day ended with a bonfire, where we shared not only more stories, but also sausages, Hermelin cheese and marshmallows. Perhaps we were a little bit tired and muddy, but it was all worth it.
