TC_EA_288The training course took place in Bělá u Jevíčka, Czech Republic, from September 16th to 22nd 2010 and involved 11 participants. During this training course Environmental Management Systems (EMSs) were made accessible to youth active in European NGOs. Participants shared and exchanged knowledge about environmental problems in their home countries and learned about related legislation. They specified criteria and gained skills that can be applied as part of EMSs in youth NGOs and their networks in order to measure the impact of their activities on the environment. Different methods based on non-formal and experiential learning, such as inter-active presentations, workshops, discussions, etc. were applied during the project.

TC_EA_DSC05329During the training course we discovered that environmental audits are in fact just part of a more comprehensive approach - environmental management. We discovered a new serious side to environmentalism, a system that deals with causes and consequences of our actions regarding the environment.

Delegates were trained to act as multipliers who offer related events (such as training courses and information sessions) themselves, and thereby help to decrease the negative impact in their own NGOs as well as in other local organizations and companies using the initial project as an example. For that purpose possible future situations were simulated by role plays and a step-by-step approach was elaborated within the framework of individual action plans.

By publishing a brochure on environmental management systems we endeavour to reach all those who would like to improve the performance of their work and activities, and not only by improving the quality of their work and the economy of production, but also by minimising the environmental consequences, too. It's not a guide that will show you the one correct way forward. Instead, it is an introduction to the complex world of environmental management with its language, legislative framework, PDCA cycles and so on. We aim in particular to encourage small and medium-sized enterprises from different regions of Europe to implement some kind of environmental management system: to become greener, safer, and indeed to profit from that in terms of economy, publicity, employees' satisfaction or even just the feel good factor which comes from doing something good for the environment.

We hope you enjoy reading our brochure and finish it feeling enriched!

EM_Audit_33The evaluation meeting took place in Prague, Czech Republic, from March 1st to 5th 2011 and involved 16 participants.

All together, we analyzed the positive and negative aspects and outcomes of the local actions.

During this evaluation meeting participants exchanged their experiences presenting the actions they carried out during the past five months in their home countries. Concrete best practices were elaborated and discussed. The procedure of environmental audits – eponymous for the project and substantial for analysing the functioning of an established environmental management system – was explored and applied in interviews about the local activities. Another focus was laid on the further development of distribution strategies for the released publication on environmental management systems and a follow-up of the local actions.

In March 2011, after the Evaluation Meeting, the YEE office team did the ecomapping of the office and on its bases established an action plan how to improve environmental performance of the office. The aim of this activity was not only to train the ecomapping method, but also benefit from the knowledge we got during the training course and the evaluaiton meeting in our everyday life.

TC_EA_074Three years ago, as it celebrated its 25th anniversary, Youth and Environment Europe (YEE) identified the need to carefully investigate the impact of its own activities on the environment. YEE is not involved in harmful production or activities and its members are dedicated to environmental protection, conservation and sustainable development, but we observed that our international projects have a serious impact on the environment, due to all the papers printed, food eaten, energy used and plane flights taken. We therefore wanted to get a clear view of how we perform our activities and how we could improve them so as to lessen their negative environmental impact. From the beginning we were devoted to spreading the knowledge that we ourselves gained to our local community informing organisations, companies and authorities about environmental best practices and environmental management.

The project involved 18 participants from four countries and lasted from August 2010 to April 2011. It consisted of three stages: a training course, a period for local action and an evaluation meeting.

We would like to thank our hosts Ecocentre Renata – Padma Farm and Ecocentre Toulcův Dvůr, our partners and all our participants for their involvement and commitment.
