Argonauta's Children Educational Summer Programme

Summertime is a perfect moment to learn new skills and have some fun. ARGONAUTA Organisation wanted to take advantage of this period to create awareness between the youngest about the environmental and historical heritage in their island in the middle of the Croatian coastline of the Adriatic sea, Murter. So we created Children Educational Summer Program 2016: During a one-hour workshop in the evening from Monday to Friday children aged 5 to 8 years came to learn new things. Every day had a different topic, every day there was a different thing to discover! We did these activities with the help of our 2016 EVS volunteers Eva Lozano (Spain) and Malgorzata Serwatka (Poland).

On ARCHAEOLOGICAL Mondays children had the opportunity to discover about the Roman presence in Croatia and specifically on the island and its archaeological site Colentum.

“RECYCLE AND REUSE” Tuesdays were meant as creativity activities where kids could develop their skills to build toys out of all kinds of recycled materials and so develop their imagination and understand the importance of reutilisation and giving a second life to objects around them.

Wednesdays and Thursdays were called “BLUE DAYS”. The topics of the workshops were marine species and their habitats. Workshop participants learned about sea creatures like red corals, crabs, fishes and other residents of the deep sea. They got knowledge about Adriatic Sea and compared it with other water basin like Baltic Sea. Children became little scientists and they made different kinds of experiments. They found out about the increasing problem related to climate change and its consequences.

Finally, FUNNY Fridays took place, a special day reserved for fun. Outdoor activities and group games delighted all children and happily rounded the end of a working week.

During each activity non-formal educational methods were used. Short presentation preceded each creativity part of the workshop. Children got knowledge which they can use in practical way. After each evening all participants came back to their home with new handmade toys made by themselves.

For the next summer 2017 we plan to prepare a lot of new and exciting activities and place them in outdoor space.
