How old / young are you? I am still young enough to be quite idealistic (or foolish?), however I am older than I look like. I am of the same age as YEE is. (To tell the truth I am slightly older, but shh!) Where do you live? I live in the Czech Republic, my hometown is a small town at Moravia called Trebic. I recommend you to visit this town if you have the opportunity, it is really nice town with Jewish quarter and Catholic cathedral. In spite of that I spend most time in Brno. What do you do (studies, work, etc)? Let's start with easier part - I work as analytic in Civic Education Centre at Masaryk University. Currently, I study psychology (master's degree study), as undergraduate I studied combination of psychology and environmental science. Besides that I also studied informatics and I would like to finish master's degree in math and economy. I had to interrupt this studies because of lack of time, but I have only one year left to finish. So it is quite probable. Which YEE Member Organization are you member of? What are your organization's main activities? I am a member of Hnuti Brontosaurus (= Brontosaurus movement). This organization was established in 1974 with a claim: 'Brontosaurus has overgrown its own limits. It didn't survive.' So the message is: let's try to be better than Brontosaurus and be aware of nature and its limits. Hnuti Brontosaurus is Czech NGO, we organize free-time activities for young people, where we combine voluntary work with games and environmental education. Main aims of Hnuti Brontosaurus are nature protection and cultural monuments conservation, informal experiential education and promotion of sustainable development. Why did you want to become a member of the YEE board? Indeed I would like to join all these great people :) I believe that I can help with promotion of YEE. And it is really great experience to be engaged in an international environmental NGO. There are so many possibilities for international cooperation, a lot of space for synergy. Let's make use of that opportunities. What is your main aim as 2011-2012 Board Member? To be seen and heard. YEE as a whole, not only me personally. I would like to improve fields that I am experienced at. It means graphic design and publishing, using of modern technologies and promotion in general. We can try to find a new way how to share knowledge and examples of good practice among member organizations, how to communicate within YEE and with public. Indeed sharing knowledge isn't a task only for me. It is the task for all of us. Which environmental problem worries you the most? The most worrying environmental problem? For me, it is a general inability to solve a lot of environmental issues effectively. We have plenty of knowledge about climate change, overfishing or pollution of oceans, but we are not able to take an action to solve them out. Most of these issues are complex and interdisciplinary and it isn't possible for one person to cover all the necessary information. We need change of education - children should be more prepared to find connections across various subjects and topics. And we desperately need more interdisciplinary cooperation. People from different branches of studies could give us another point of view, so we would be able to see the problem in more complex way and to propose better solutions. Besides that, if more branches of science are engaged in finding a solution, there will be much better agreement on the solution. I know, sometimea it is really difficult to cooperate with people from different field of study. They don't understand us and they have very distinct point of view from ours. What is more, they have the same feeling about us :) Let's drop this subject. Apart from that, right now I am really worried about situation in Czech National Park Sumava. There is a conflict between politicians and nature protection which results in silencing scientists and logging of wood. Neither NGOs nor scientific community are able to stop that and moreover there are a few voices calling for cancellation of the park. What is your favorite place in nature? I love mossy forest and climbing to treetops, windy mountains and walking barefoot on meadows full of dew. I don't have one place that I would like the most. |
