Fort Oelegem holds the Bat record in Flanders |
In an earlier issue of YEE Members News (December 2012), we were allowed to report for the first time on our Natuur 2000 bat project "Fort Oelegem", situated in the surroundings of Antwerp.
This project celebrates its 30th anniversary this year (2014). The start of it was already special, as our yearly January bat count revealed Fort Oelegem being the most important bat hibernation site in Flanders.
We counted 1234 bats in total, including 423 Daubenton's bats (Myotis daubentonii), 212 Whiskered or Brandt's bats (Myotis mystacinus or Myotis brandtii), 437 Natterer's bats (Myotis nattereri), 101 Geoffroy's bats (Myotis emarginatus), 7 long-eared bats (Plecotus auritus) and 6 pipistrelle bats (Pipistrellus pipistrellus).
Very important for overpopulated Flanders was the presence of the 101 endangered Geoffroy's bats : in the whole country the counts never exceed 600.
To put these figures in a somewhat broader context : in total some 12000 so called "cave dwelling " bats use to hibernate in Flanders, of which half is to be found in the circle of forts surrounding Antwerp since 1900, the other half to be found in the rest of the country.
Fort Oelegem, built in 1909 and managed by Natuur 2000 since 1984 , is a part of the mentioned circle of forts. To guarantee a safe bat hibernation, it's closed every year from October till April. From May till September it's open for interested visitors, who may attend for instance our bat information evenings.
