Pollution |
Pollution occurs in different forms; air, water, soil, radioactive, noise, heat/ thermal and light. Every form of pollution has two sources of occurrence: the point and the non-point sources. The point sources are easy to identify, monitor and control, whereas the non-point sources are hard to control. (source: Conserve-energy-future).
In this section you can get acquainted with some facts about pollution: • The air we breathe has a very exact chemical composition; 99% of it is made up of nitrogen, oxygen, water vapour and inert gases. Air pollution occurs when things that aren't normally there are added to the air. (Universal Industrial Gases) • 14 billion pounds of garbage are dumped into the ocean every year. Most of it is plastic.(Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution) • Due to constant use of insecticides and pesticides, the soil may become infertile and plants may not be able to grow properly. (US National Institutes of Health) • The increase in the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere leads to smog which can restrict sunlight from reaching the earth and, thus, preventing plants in the process of photosynthesis. (CO2NOW) • Over 1 million seabirds and 100,000 sea mammals are killed by pollution every year. (US Environmental Protection Agency) • Recycling and composting prevented 85 million tons of material away from being disposed of in 2010, up from 18 million tons in 1980. (US Environmental Protection Agency)
