Who we are

Youth and Environment Europe (YEE) is the largest independent European network of environmental youth organizations. YEE unites 42 member organisations coming from 25 countries.

YEE was founded as the European region of the International Youth Federation for Environmental Studies and Conservation (IYF) in 1983. YEE is a member of the United Nations Environment (UNEP), European Environmental Bureau, and European Youth Forum, and a co-founding member of the EU4Ocean Coalition. Our HQ is in Prague, Czech Republic.

All activities and projects of YEE are organised and carried out by young people under 30. YEE organises, facilitates and supports projects and campaigns aiming to increase the knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of the environment and the awareness of climate issues among young people in Europe. We are also an active hosting organisations for the European Solidarity Corps volunteers.

The office team consists of the Secretary General, Project Manager and Project Coordinator, Communications Manager and Communications Coordinator, Advocacy Manager and Advocacy Coordinator and one ESC volunteer.

YEE History

  • 3rd August 1983

Youth and Environment Europe was founded as the European regional branch of the International Youth Federation for Environmental Studies and Conservation (IYF) on the 3rd of August 1983 in Stockholm. The YEE office has been located in three locations. The first YEE office was based in Copenhagen.

IYF established YEE with the cooperation of 15 organisations. Three founding organisations are still members of YEE: Faltbiologerna (Sweden), DJN (Germany), and JNM (Belgium).

  • 1986

After the work of a research group on the forest, a new organisation was born from YEE: the European Youth Forest Action (EYFA) that remains active today.

  • 1990

The YEE office moved to it’s second location in Utrecht, the Netherlands to locate it more centrally to the member organisations being part of the network at that time.

  • 1991

As a further subgroup from EYFA, ASEED started to work as a separate network.

  • 1990s

A member organisation from Malta hosted a second YEE office in order to deal with the Mediterranean issues closely.

  • 1998

The third change of the location of the office occurred. This time the medieval stronghold Toulcuv Dvur in Prague was chosen. Toulcuv Dvur is an ecological center that unites a range of ecological, educational and cultural activities. The area consists of eight hectares of land including wetlands around a little stream.

  • 2003

YEE started to host volunteers who help as members of the office team in daily work of the organisation.

  • 2020

After spending more than 10 years in Toulcov Dvur, the YEE office moved again but this time within Prague. Since the beginning of 2020, the YEE Office is located in the beautiful district of Vinohrady, close to the city centre.

YEE became a founding member of the EU4Ocean Coalition and Generation Climate Europe.
