This position paper is directed at Council of Europe Member States and those working to empower young environmental human rights defenders. It aims to address protection gaps and the empowerment of young environmental defenders, for example through stronger institutional support and recognition.
The three proposals outlined include:
- The structural inclusion and formal recognition of young environmental defenders, for example within local and national public participation processes.
- The implementation of targeted protection measures and support systems tailored to the specific risks and burnout faced by young activists.
- The amplification of civil society voices through strategic forums and active policy engagement to promote democratic environmental governance
We invite young activists, civil society organisations, and partners to support the position paper by engaging with our ongoing advocacy, sharing feedback, and joining our collective efforts to protect young defenders across Europe.
