We cleaned up Prague together with IYNF

Did you know that an estimated waste generated by a citizen in the EU is 492 kg per year? That is the equivalent of over 1.3 kilograms of waste every day. Waste represents a massive challenge to our society, especially when it is left abandoned without any possibility of processing.

Being aware of this problem, on Monday the 21st of June 2021, our ESC Volunteers Juanan and Camille took the challenge, together with the volunteers from International Young Nature Friends, to clean one of the biggest parks in Prague, Divoká Šarka. The clean-up took place within the framework of the Ukliďme Česko initiative, whose name in English literally means “Let’s clean the Czech Republic”. This initiative provided YEE and IYNF with gloves and bags to collect the trash in the area. The clean-up group also included external participants who knew about the activity from social media.

The results were excellent – the participants collected several bags of waste of all types. They could also note that the park was not excessively dirty, which was a good sign that there were many respectful users. However, they were impressed by the wide variety of the trash, including bottles, plastic bags, and cigarettes – according to Ocean Conservancy, each single one of them can pollute up to 50 liters of water.

After such a good job, they sat down in the grass and shared some well-deserved snacks. More to come in the next year!
