Online Training Course: Building the Vision I.

On the 18th – 23rd of May, 2020, 25 participants from countries around the world came together for the ‘Building the Vision’ Online Training Course.

We are very grateful to have counted on our partner organisations and member organisations without which we would not be able to organise such a successful event.

Thank you to Yeghvard youth-ecological NGO and FYCA from Armenia, Association Argonauta from Croatia, Umbrella from Georgia and ”Common Sense” Youth Organization from Azerbaijan.

This Online Training is the first part of the “Imagining the Future” project.

During the 6 days, participants learned, built and focused on the necessity of different organisational aspects such as membership management and fundraising. We believe that this online training provided the participants and their organisations with the right base before diving into advocacy and political lobbying on local, regional, national, and international levels.

The objectives of the Online Training were:

Gain competences and skills needed to advocate, campaign and lobby for environmental policies on local level;
Learn how to develop the organisational structure and vision, mission & values for an organisation as well as practical skills of training it;
Learn how to properly set up aims and objectives for your organisation and how to practice non discrimination and how to create inclusive atmosphere within your organisation;
Gain knowledge of membership management and develop skills in creating fundraising strategies and crowdfunding campaigns;
Have the opportunity to present your movement or organisation and to share your previous experience and establish the common ground and new partnerships with other participants;
Have the chance to talk to other learners and youth workers from all over the world, and learn from each other;
Have the chance to work on the exciting training course outputs (articles, videos, infographics, etc.).

We have started off with the Meet & Greet Day!

1.1 Getting to know each other by Romy

During this session, our participants had a chance to get to know each other with other participants & the project team, and to engage together in some team building activities to felt more comfortable with each other before we dived into deeper topics!

1.2 Intro Session / Getting to Know the Programme by Tanya & Karolina

Thanks to this session, our participants were able to understand why we are all here in the first place! They got familiar with what our aims and objectives are and with the training course´s methods as well. We went through the programme of the training course together and looked into all of its aspects and the follow-up activities. We had the opportunity to get to know each other’s expectations and fears, and together we have created a set of rules we followed during this training.

1.3 More team building! by Naira & Denimir

This session was a fun challenge 🙂 Participants experienced a group team building challenges that helped them know even more about each other.

1.4 Reflection Groups by Romy & Tim

In small groups, wel discussed the day, session by session and we created a space for participants to evaluate and reflect on the learning and what they had learned. We also talked about the group atmosphere and asked participants to give us feedback on technicalities.

Vision Building

2.0 Using Future Workshops for Vision Building by Tim & Denimir

Future Workshops are a comprehensive method for building visions in many different contexts. It follows the approach of changing the actual situation by first criticizing it, then dreaming about a preferable future using a lot of fantasy, and finally to find ways to move from an actual situation to a preferable one.

So, it was the perfect method to build the vision of youth environmental organisations of the future, which were experienced in practice.

2.1 Follow-up Future Workshop / Design of Imaginary Organisations by Tim & Tanya

In the afternoon the Future Workshop continued. And the imaginary organisations were designed in smaller groups as a basis for the work in the next workshop days.

2.2 Reflection Groups by Romy & Tim

In small groups, we discussed the day, session by session and we evaluated and reflected on your learning and how what we had learned could be used in our future work. We also talked about the group atmosphere and they gave us feedback on technicalities.

NGO Foundational Structures

3.0 Mission Vision Values & Objectives, Aims By Naira & Denimir

For any newly-established organization one of the first steps is to create its vision, mission, values, aims and objectives. The organizations should have them written and accepted by the board of the organization.

These components are important to have in order to have a clear vision of the fields of activities in the organization. It becomes easier for the organizations to know what kind of projects to implement, where to apply for funding and which organizations to cooperate with. It is also crucial to have these components in the statutes of the organization so that other people and organizations can read them and have a clear idea of the organization’s main field of interest.

In this session, we learnt how to develop these aspects.

3.1 Organizational Structures & Decision Making by Jovana & Denimir

In this session we learnt from each other about different types of organizational structures, rules, roles and responsibilities, and related it to ensuring inclusive and democratic decision making, using the human library method.

Fundraising & Crowdfunding

4.0 Fundraising by Tanya & Tim

During this session, we learnt the main fundraising strategies and practice how to develop a fundraising plan for our organisation.

4.1 Crowdfunding by Tanya & Naira

After the fundraising session, we looked into the details of crowdfunding and designed a crowdfunding campaign. This session explained fundraising through online crowdfunding, introduced participants to crowdfunding platforms, successful crowdfunding strategies and taught them how to run a crowdfunding campaign, based on the common best practices and scientific research.

5.0 NGO & Membership Management By Jovana & Naira

After this session, we gained knowledge about the components of NGO and membership management. We learnt about recruiting and welcoming members and keeping them engaged and motivated.

5.1 Finalizing Working on Projects & Imaginary groups presentations by Jovana & Tanya & Romy

During this session, we had time to finish the presentations of the work in your Imaginary Organisations throughout the training course. After finalizing everything, we presented the amazing work we did throughout the training course!

Implementation & Evaluation Day

6.0 Implementation with a Pro-Action-Café: Putting it into my NGO by Naira & Tim

We reminded what skills we learned and knowledge we gained throughout the week and supported them all in putting these things into practice in their own NGOs.

During this session, they had a chance to apply what they learnt during the training course to a real-life situation or a case that they are long planning to solve in their organisations.

6.1 Final evaluation Romy

We did the final evaluation together. We reflected on what resembled this training for them and what is that they will bring back home from it. We also discussed the follow-up and next steps of the project.
